NCEPU was established in 1958 in Beijing as the “Beijing Electric Power College.” Over decades the school expanded and evolved: in 1995 it merged with another institute and adopted the current name. After national power‑system reforms in 2003 administrative control shifted from the state power authority to the Ministry of Education, and a university council composed of major state power enterprises joined management.
