Course Overview

The one‑year Chinese language program at NCEPU supports steady development in Mandarin across listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students begin at a level that matches their background, from zero experience to intermediate learners, and follow a curriculum that builds language ability with regular practice and instruction. Supplementary cultural classes give learners hands‑on exposure to traditional Chinese arts, such as martial arts and calligraphy, helping link language study with practical cultural context. Progress toward HSK proficiency goals is supported through targeted training courses that help learners prepare for official language tests. The environment of a major research university with international students from many countries contributes to language use outside the classroom and peer exchange across cultures. Many graduates use their enhanced Mandarin skills to move into academic programs, internships, and careers where Chinese proficiency adds value. The program’s continued support for cultural and practical language application reflects its focus on broadening learners’ communication ability and global engagement.

General Eligibility

• Must be a non‑Chinese citizen with a valid passport.
• High school diploma or equivalent is typically required for year‑long programs.
• Applicants submit academic documents, passport copy, application form, and sometimes an HSK score (if available).
• Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS) may support the one‑year language program when recommended by a local Confucius Institute. Other university or external scholarships may also be available depending on eligibility.

Part Time Work Details

International students with a valid X‑visa can work part‑time on‑campus (typically up to 20 hrs/week); off‑campus work requires local and university approvals and is limited.

Language Requirement

• This Chinese language program is delivered in Mandarin and does not require a formal English test for entry. For administrative or general admission purposes, if English proof is submitted, common thresholds at Chinese universities include:

  • IELTS: ~5.5 (guideline)

  • TOEFL iBT: ~70 (guideline)

  • PTE Academic: ~46 (guideline)

  • Duolingo English Test: ~90 (guideline)
