Duolingo Hero

What is the Duolingo English Test?

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online English proficiency test that you can take from your own home with a computer and internet connection. It is used by thousands of universities and colleges worldwide as proof of English language ability, especially for international students.

Key details about the test

The Duolingo English Test is fully online and computer based, takes around 1 hour to complete, and uses an adaptive format where questions get easier or harder based on your responses. It tests reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in an integrated way, and provides results usually within a few days.

Your performance is scored on a scale from 10 to 160, and universities set their own minimum score requirements.

Many institutions in the United States, Canada and Europe accept the Duolingo English Test for admission. Some universities in the United Kingdom accept it for academic entry, but for visa purposes you may still need a UKVI approved English test. BHE UNI helps you understand when Duolingo is suitable and when IELTS or another test is required.

What is Duolingo English Test

Who Should Consider the Duolingo English Test?

You may find the Duolingo English Test suitable if you need a fast and flexible English test that you can take from home, and you are applying to universities that explicitly accept Duolingo as proof of English. It can also be a good option if you want an alternative to traditional test formats such as IELTS or TOEFL, have limited time before application deadlines and need quick results, or prefer an online, adaptive exam experience rather than paper based testing.

We always check your target universities and programmes first, to confirm whether Duolingo is accepted and what score you need.

Duolingo English Test Format and Question Types

The Duolingo English Test is different from traditional exams. It uses short, varied tasks to measure your reading, writing,
listening and speaking within one integrated assessment.

Examples of Duolingo style tasks
Reading Tasks

You may see "Read and complete" where you fill missing letters in words, or "Read and select" where you choose which words from a list are actual English words.

Listening Tasks

You may get "Listen and select" where you hear words and select the ones that are real English words, or "Listen and type" where you type exactly what you hear in short audio clips.

Speaking Tasks

You may be asked to "Read aloud" by reading a sentence on screen and recording yourself speaking, or "Speak about a topic" where you record yourself speaking on a given topic for a set amount of time.

Writing Tasks

You may need to "Write about the photo or prompt" by responding to an image or a written prompt.

Final Samples

At the end, you complete a video speaking sample and a writing sample that can be viewed by universities along with your score.

Admission vs visa requirements

For some students, Duolingo is accepted for admission but the visa process may still require IELTS or another approved test, particularly for the United Kingdom.

How BHE UNI supports your decision

BHE UNI helps you check whether Duolingo alone is enough for your chosen country and course, decide whether to take Duolingo, IELTS or both, based on your timeline, and plan your English testing strategy so that you do not waste time or money. We also help you understand how your Duolingo score compares roughly to other test scores, using university guidance.

If you later need IELTS for UKVI or another specific requirement, our team can also guide you on that pathway.
