HDU began in 1956 as the Hangzhou Aviation Industry Finance and Economics School. Over years it underwent several reorganizations and name changes: from a vocational/industry school to Hangzhou Institute of Electronics Industry, then later merging with other institutions (such as a publishing school in 2003), and finally was granted full university status in 2004 as Hangzhou Dianzi University. Since then, HDU has expanded to multiple campuses, broadened its academic offerings, and built strong research capacity in electronics, information technology, management and other fields. Over decades the university has trained tens of thousands of graduates, many of whom now work in leading tech or business roles, contributing to industry and society.

Students choose HDU for its blend of solid technical education, diverse programme offerings, and supportive student services. The university is strong in electronics, information science, computer science, business and management — making it suitable for those who want skills aligned with modern industry needs. HDU offers English‑taught programmes and accepts international applicants, giving a global‑friendly environment. International students receive support from the university’s International Office for admissions, visa paperwork and campus accommodation. The campus facilities, research labs, and its location in Hangzhou add to the appeal.
