Ranking

Wintec is a tertiary institute/polytechnic rather than a university, so several university league tables do not publish a ranking for it.

    • Times Higher Education World University Rankings: Not ranked as a university.
    • QS World University Rankings by Subject: No QS university subject ranking listed for Wintec.
    • UK University League Table: Not applicable. Wintec is in New Zealand, not the UK.
    • The Guardian University Rankings: Not applicable. The Guardian table covers UK universities.

These rankings should not be treated as missing academic information; Wintec is assessed within New Zealand's tertiary education system rather than the UK university ranking system.

English Language Requirements

Wintec requires English proficiency for mainstream programmes where English is not the student's first language. The minimum IELTS level depends on the qualification:

Study Level IELTS Requirement
Concurrent programmes 5.5, minimum 5.0 in each band
Level 4 and below 5.5, minimum 5.0 in each band
Levels 5–7 6.0, minimum 5.5 in each band
Level 8 and above 6.5, minimum 6.0 in each band

Equivalent recognised English tests may be accepted under the relevant NZQA requirements. Course-specific requirements can be higher, especially for health programmes

Scholarship Policy

Wintec has a range of scholarships covering areas such as business, health, nursing, information technology, media arts, science, engineering and other subjects. Awards can be based on academic results, financial circumstances, community involvement, subject area or other eligibility conditions.

For international students, Wintec's current scholarship FAQ states that there are no scholarships currently open directly to international students. Students can check external opportunities, including New Zealand government scholarship options.

Some scholarships have specific eligibility rules. For example, the Leaupepe Elisapeta (Peta) Karalus Scholarship provides tuition-fee support for eligible Pacific students studying selected health and social practice degrees.

Fees & Funding

International tuition fees vary by programme, qualification level and subject. Wintec publishes a 2026 International Fees Flyer, so applicants should check the fee for their selected course before applying.

As an indication, some Wintec programmes list annual domestic fees around NZD $8,000–$9,000, but international students normally pay different fees. Current external listings show examples such as approximately NZD $26,600 per year for some bachelor's programmes, so applicants should use the official international fee quote for their chosen programme rather than a general figure.

Funding options can include scholarships, personal or family funds, education loans and approved sponsorship. Immigration New Zealand requires evidence of sufficient tuition and living funds for a student visa.

Application Guidelines

International applicants can apply through an authorised education agent or directly to Wintec. The main process is:

  1. Select a programme and check the academic and English requirements.
  2. Complete the Wintec International Application Form.
  3. Submit verified supporting documents.
  4. Wintec assesses the application.
  5. Receive an offer of place.
  6. Accept the offer and pay the required fees.
  7. Receive the paid offer documentation needed for the visa process.
  8. Apply for a New Zealand student visa.

Common documents include academic certificates and transcripts, passport identification, English test results where required, and other programme-specific documents. Wintec advises applicants using an agent to submit the completed application and verified documents through their agent; direct applicants can send the application and documents to Wintec's international team

Apply Online

Yes. Wintec provides online application facilities. International students follow a separate international application process from domestic applicants.

Immigration Support Service

Wintec provides international student support covering pre-arrival information, orientation, accommodation, airport transfers and guidance related to the student visa process. International orientation includes information about taking the offer letter to Immigration New Zealand for the visa process, paying fees and preparing for travel.

Students must still meet Immigration New Zealand's visa requirements. For a Fee Paying Student Visa, applicants need an offer from an approved education provider, evidence of tuition funding, sufficient living funds and acceptable insurance. The current living-fund requirement for tertiary students is NZD $20,000 per year or NZD $1,667 per month for shorter courses.

Student Village

The Student Village is based at the City Campus and is suited to students who want a supported residential setting. Meals are included in the accommodation fee. Facilities include Wi-Fi, communal kitchens, common areas, residential staff, CCTV security, bicycle storage, and nearby shops, cafés, restaurants, and public transport.

For 2026, the standard accommodation fee is NZ$350 per week, based on a 42-week contract and including meals. The annual fee is NZ$14,700. A refundable contingency deposit of NZ$1,050 and other listed fees may apply.

Wintec Apartments

Wintec Apartments are located in central Hamilton and suit mature students and international students who prefer independent living. Students have a furnished private bedroom and share apartment facilities. Meals are not included in the standard accommodation fee.

For 2026, the standard long-term rate is NZ$270 per week, or NZ$11,880 for 44 weeks. Wi-Fi is free. A refundable NZ$1,080 contingency deposit and other fees may apply.

Off-Campus Student Accommodations

Students who prefer to live outside Wintec accommodation can choose homestays or private flatting in Hamilton. Wintec's homestay option places international students with a New Zealand family and includes a furnished private bedroom, shared household facilities, Wi-Fi, and meals. Wintec's International Centre can arrange accommodation placement and airport pickup for international students.

Private flatting gives students more choice over location and living arrangements. Students should budget for rent, food, electricity, internet, furniture, and transport. Wintec notes that these extra costs need to be included when comparing private flatting with student accommodation.

For international students, Wintec estimates that around NZ$20,000 per year is needed for living costs, separate from tuition fees.
