The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) traces its origin to 1978 when the then Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) began operating.  In June 2012 the institution was formally renamed UCAS with full authority to grant masters and doctoral degrees.  Over the years, UCAS has grown to serve tens of thousands of graduate students and thousands of international learners, and it has produced many CAS and CAE (Chinese Academy of Engineering) members. It has established extensive research links with institutes under CAS and engaged in international cooperation, extending its reach beyond China.

Many students choose UCAS for its strong research ties, excellent faculty drawn from CAS institutes, and rich resources in science and engineering. The university offers international student support via a dedicated office, scholarships for top candidates, and on-campus housing options. The international student body and links with global research networks help learners access diverse perspectives and opportunities.

  • The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) as UCAS is a designated university, offering tuition waiver (RMB 30,000/year for Master’s; RMB 40,000/year for Doctoral) plus monthly stipend and accommodation subsidy.

  • Research assistantships or grants via CAS institutes, depending on supervisor and programme.

Student Accommodation

On-campus housing at UCAS offers double rooms, shared rooms, air-conditioning, desk and wardrobe, internet access and hot water.  The typical fee for international students is about RMB 900 per person per month for a double room on-campus.  For scholarship-holders, basic accommodation may be included or subsidised (e.g., accommodation subsidy up to RMB 700/month for Master’s, RMB 1,000/month for Doctoral under certain scholarships).

Off-Campus Student Accommodations

Near the campuses in Beijing (e.g., Zhongguancun, Yuquanlu), private rental housing is available. Students living off-campus should check commute time, public transport links, lease terms and local registration requirements. Renting privately often costs more than on-campus dorms, but offers more independence and options (studio, shared flat, etc).
