The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) traces its origins to 1828 as the 'Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge'. Over the years, it evolved through several stages, becoming the 'Harris Institute' in 1882, 'Harris College' in 1956, 'Preston Polytechnic' in 1973, and 'Lancashire Polytechnic' in 1984. In 1992, it achieved university status and was renamed the University of Central Lancashire. In December 2024, the institution received approval to change its name to the University of Lancashire, effective from September 2025 .

UCLan has expanded its reach internationally, establishing a campus in Cyprus in 2012, which is the first British university in the country.
