UPSI began in 1922 as the Sultan Idris Training College (SITC), serving as the first teacher training center in Malaya. It evolved into Institut Perguruan Sultan Idris in 1987, expanding its teacher education curriculum. On May 1, 1997, the institution gained full university status under government orders, taking its present name.
