Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by overseas Chinese leader Tan Kah Kee in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China. It became one of China's top higher education institutions, joining national development schemes such as Project 211, Project 985, and Double First Class University status.
In 2013, following an invitation from the Malaysian Ministry of Education, Xiamen University established its first overseas branch campus in Sepang, Selangor. Construction began in 2014, and the campus welcomed its first cohort of students in February 2016. Since opening, the Malaysia campus has expanded its program offerings across multiple disciplines, built advanced academic and residential facilities, and established research partnerships across the ASEAN region.
