Course Overview

The Forensic Ballistics course is part of the MSc Forensic Programme. It is convenient and hands-on, aiming to clearly understand how firearms and ammunition function, the science of ballistics, the role of the forensic firearms examiner, and how the forensic evidence produced in gun crime can help resolve criminal and civil law issues.

The course consists of one week of introductory studies followed by academic instruction in modular form. Most modules are of five days duration, interspersed with weeks devoted to private study. Cranfield academics, external leading experts, and industry specialists in the field of firearms lead the taught phase of the course. Students must take four core and seven course-specific modules and choose three elective modules based on their background, future requirements, or interests. A four-month research project and a thesis, literature review, or paper follow this.

General Eligibility

A first- or second-class honors degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline such as a science, archaeology, anthropology, engineering, forensic science, materials, or the professional equivalent.
