Course Overview

Launch your career in business with the University of the West of Scotland’s BA Business degree.

Developed in partnership with business and industry leaders at the forefront of their profession, this degree will equip you with the skills and attitude to meet the challenges of a stimulating career in business.

You can also tailor your studies to suit your interests and career goals, with a number of optional modules available throughout the course of your study.

Whether you are interested in enterprise and entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, economics, or human resources, this degree provides the opportunity to learn many important business disciplines.

General Eligibility

Our Minimum Entry Requirements are applicable to those applicants who have not had an equal opportunity to demonstrate their academic ability at school or college and are known as ‘widening access’ applicants. We also sometimes refer to this type of applicant as receiving a ‘contextual’ offer. We may be able to provide you with a contextual offer if you fall into one of the categories below:

  • You have been in care (care-experienced/care-leaver)

  • You are a young carer

  • government-recognizedecognised asylum or refugee status

  • You are estranged from your family or guardians

  • You live in a SIMD decile 1-4 (SIMD20/40)* Scottish postcode area

What You'll Study

1 Year 1

In year 1 you will be introduced to key areas of business including finance, human resources management, marketing, economics, as well as developing practical skills in communication techniques, time management, academic writing, and presentation skills. Options include topics concerning entrepreneurialism, leadership, law, and events.

LEARNING AND TEACHING:

Scheduled learning: 20%

Independent study: 80%

2 Year 2

In year 2, you will develop skills and apply knowledge across a range of business disciplines. You can specialise in a particular area, such as human resource management, or marketing, or pursue a much broader business degree. Other areas include business ethics, the public sector, and economics.

Scheduled learning: 21%

Independent study: 79%

3 Year 3

In year 3, you will develop an understanding of the complex issues at work in the general and specialist areas of business, management, and strategy, as well as appreciate and reflect on the impact of entrepreneurship, marketing, and leadership within businesses today.

Scheduled learning: 36%

Independent study: 56%

Placement: 8%

4 Year 4

In year 4, you will complete a dissertation on a topic of your choice and undertake further study in your chosen specialism, including developing research skills.
