Founded in 1996 as Institut Latihan Sultan Ahmad Shah (ILSAS), the institution served as the primary training facility for Tenaga Nasional Berhad. In 1997, it transitioned into a full university status, taking the name Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). Since its establishment, the university expanded its academic structure beyond technical training to comprehensive degree programs in engineering, computing, digital technology, finance, and management.

Over twenty-five years of operations, UNITEN established two main campuses in Putrajaya and Pahang. It forged research collaborations with industrial energy partners, government agencies, and international universities. Its long-term developmental focus remains centered on power generation, renewable technology, computer science, and business management education.

Students choose UNITEN for its industry-linked curriculum, directly connected to Malaysia’s energy sector leader, Tenaga Nasional Berhad. The academic structure combines theoretical teaching with practical engineering and technology applications. Students gain access to specialized laboratories, campus accommodation, career preparation support, and international student facilities.
