Founded in 1931 as the School of Agriculture, the institution evolved into the College of Agriculture Malaya in 1947. In 1971, it merged with the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Malaya to form Universiti Pertanian Malaysia. The institution expanded its academic scope beyond agriculture over the following decades, adding programs in science, technology, medicine, and humanities.

In 1997, the university formally renamed itself Universiti Putra Malaysia to reflect its status as a multi-disciplinary research institution. Major milestones include achieving status as a designated Research University in Malaysia and establishing the Bintulu campus to advance forestry and agricultural technology studies. Today, the university contributes to scientific innovation and professional education across Southeast Asia.
