Queen Mary University of London has a history that dates back to 1785 with the founding of London Hospital Medical College, one of England's oldest medical schools. During the nineteenth century, several colleges were established across East London, including People's Palace, East London College, St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, and Westfield College. These institutions later joined together through a series of mergers. In 1989, Queen Mary and Westfield College combined, followed by the addition of St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College and London Hospital Medical College in 1995. The university adopted its current name, Queen Mary University of London, in 2013. Today, it is a member of the Russell Group and is known for teaching and research across medicine, dentistry, law, engineering, business, science, humanities, and social sciences.
