Lakehead University began as the Lakehead Technical Institute in 1946, addressing the need for higher education in Northwestern Ontario. In 1957, it expanded into the Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology. By 1965, these institutions merged to form Lakehead University. The Thunder Bay campus became the main site, and in 2006, a second campus opened in Orillia. Lakehead has since developed programs in engineering, health sciences, law, and Indigenous education. It also houses the Paleo-DNA Laboratory, recognized for its contributions to forensic science and ancient DNA research.

Lakehead University offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs with a focus on practical learning. Students benefit from small class sizes, research opportunities, and support services. The university's diverse community includes a significant Indigenous student population. Facilities like the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law provide specialized education. Lakehead's commitment to sustainability is evident in its LEED-certified buildings and environmental programs.
