Abertay University traces its earliest roots to 1888, when the Dundee Technical Institute opened to provide vocational education in engineering, mechanics, construction and textiles. The institute evolved through the twentieth century, gaining degree-awarding powers in the early 1990s and being granted university status in 1994 under the name University of Abertay Dundee. Abertay has since developed key strengths in computing, digital games, cyber-security and applied sciences, most famously launching the world’s first undergraduate computer games degree in 1997. The university has grown its research profile in areas like engineering, food science and art & design, with increasing recognition for “internationally excellent” output. Throughout this period the institution has kept a focus on industry-relevant training, regional partnerships and on preparing graduates for real-world careers.

Students choose Abertay University because it combines strong teaching with clear links to industry, especially in fields like digital games development, cybersecurity, computing and business. The campus is based in central Dundee, with accessible facilities and a smaller-scale environment that allows for personal support from tutors and the student services team. International students join a community that welcomes over 60 nationalities and benefits from dedicated teams for orientation, visa guidance and academic advice.
