Applications are now being invited for a fully-funded 3-year PhD studentship at the Department of Computer Science, City, University of London, under the prestigious City St George initiative. This pioneering programme is co-funded by UK Innovation and the global EdTech leader BHE Uni.
This scholarship offers a unique chance to join a cutting-edge research project focused on developing an AI-powered conversational interview system designed to revolutionise university admissions. The research aims to replace traditional, often subjective interview methods with a more fair, efficient, and unbiased AI-driven alternative.
Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML) to conduct real-time, adaptive interviews.
Multimodal Analysis, including tone of voice, facial expressions, and sentiment analysis, for holistic candidate evaluation.
Automated Ranking Algorithms that align with university-specific selection criteria.
Bias mitigation strategies to ensure fairness and objectivity in AI-assisted decision-making.
Real-world testing using actual university admissions data, ensuring meaningful impact and practical value.
This PhD will make a significant contribution to both the academic field and the higher education sector by exploring how AI can enhance ethical decision-making in admissions and improve access for underrepresented candidates.
A first or upper second-class BEng and MEng (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a related discipline.
Strong background in Python, with experience in TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar AI frameworks.
Demonstrated knowledge in NLP, machine learning, and AI ethics.
Desirable (but not mandatory): experience in computer vision, audio signal processing, or prior published research.
Sound foundational knowledge of AI and its subfields.
Capability to conduct independent, original research.
Critical thinking skills and a strong academic track record.
A keen interest in ethical AI applications, particularly in educational contexts.
