Course Overview

This interdisciplinary program captures the broad range of social, political, cultural, and economic forces at play in an increasingly interdependent world. Courses are linked by language, topic, and region of the world, and class work is enhanced by a related international study abroad experience. The degree couples a thorough background in foreign language with one of five separate degree tracks: Commerce, Communication and Media, Global Cultural Studies, Environmental Studies, or Geographic Information Systems. Students develop language proficiency, analytical skills, substantive knowledge, and cultural sensitivity.

The International Commerce track combines a basic set of courses in business practice with a broader set of courses in international economic and social theory. Student choose their coursework from a list that spans at least four colleges of the university. It provides students with a well-developed understanding of the interconnectedness of global commercial systems.

The International Communication and Media track offers a discrete set of courses that provide students with a strong background in how media function in a global setting. As one of the largest sectors of the American and global economy, communication and media occupy a major role in our private and professional lives. Moreover, this sector of the economy often functions transnationally in a relatively seamless fashion.

The Global Cultural Studies track offers students both the fundamental theoretical background in cultural studies as well as a broad array of courses in international cultural production and criticism. This humanities based program provides students with a rich understanding of artistic expression in a global setting.

Through the International Environmental Studies track, students work through a fascinating array of coursework chosen among various disciplines including geoscience, science, agriculture and life sciences, and liberal arts. Globalization and rapid industrialization have brought about a set of environmental concerns that defy national boundaries. Ultimately students will have a firm grasp of the myriad environmental issues that arise from our global interconnectedness.

Finally, the International Geographic Information Systems track adds a tremendous skill set to the already substantial ones offered by the core INTS major. The International GIS track immerses students in the workings of spatially distributed information that is used in the environmental, transportation, defense, and many other sectors of the economy. Students will develop skills in spatial analysis and advanced applications of GIS technologies.
