Course Overview

The course allows one to study at a partner university overseas or complete a work placement in the industry.

After their second year, students on the BA (Hons) Mass Communications can choose to specialize in our BA (Hons) Mass Communications, Advertising & Public Relations.

It also provides students with the knowledge & skills for postgraduate study in related areas.

The three degrees in this suite of programs share the same structure in the first two years. In the third year, you will choose one of the three degree strands, offering you an opportunity to specialize. 

Upon completion, you will be awarded the named degree of the strand you completed.  

The program will:

  • Develop your transferable skills to prepare you for graduate employment, including your critical, analytical, problem-based learning and communication skills

  • develop your appreciation for academic, philosophical, and professional debates, concepts, and theories related to communication

  • prepare you for postgraduate study in mass communications and the professional and creative communication Industries (such as mass communications, media, advertising, PR, branding/brand management, marketing, digital communication, and international communication)

  • enhance your personal and professional growth, and develop your interpersonal and networking skills.

General Eligibility

Our entry requirements indicate standard and Minimum qualifications with which we usually accept students. However, competition for places varies yearly, and you aren't guaranteed a business if you meet the minimum qualifications.

Minimum year 1

SQA Higher

Standard Entry Requirement

BBCC, including Grade C in English or another literary subject*.

Minimum Offer Entry Requirement

CCCC, including English or another literary subject*.

A Level

CCD including English or another literary subject*.

Irish Leaving Certificate

H3, H3, H3, H3 at HL, including English or another literary subject*.

BTEC (QCF) Extended Diploma Level 3

Minimum grades MMM (Merit, Merit, Merit) in a related subject.

BTEC (QCF) National Diploma Level 3

Minimum grades D*D* (Distinction*, Distinction*) in a related subject.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

Award of Diploma with 26 points overall with three HL subjects at grades 5, 5, 5, including English and another literary subject*

Literary subjects accepted

*Modern Studies, History, Psychology, RMPS, Latin, Sociology, Theology, Media Studies, Politics, Classics, Philosophy, Geography, ESOL grade A.

T Level

Grade Pass

T Level must be completed in an English/Literary subject, or an A Level in an English issue may be required.

Minimum year 2

HNC

Pass HNC with grade B at SCQF level 8 in all graded units. 

Accepted HNCs - Advertising and PR, Media and Communication, Events Management. We will consider other HNCs where primary subject areas include Advertising, PR, Marketing, Branding, etc.

Minimum year 3

HND

Pass HND with grade B at SCQF level 8 in all graded units. 

Accepted HNDs - Advertising and PR, Media and Communication, Events Management. We will consider other HNDs where primary subject areas include Advertising, PR, Marketing, Branding, etc.

  • IELTS (Academic)

    6.0 overall, with no component below 5.5

    TOEFL Internet-Based Test

    80 overall, with a minimum of 17 in listening, 18 in reading, 20 in speaking, and 17 in writing

    Pearson’s Test of Academic English

    56 overall, with a minimum of 51 in each component

    Cambridge C2 Proficiency (formerly Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE))

    169 overall, with a minimum of 162 in each component

    Cambridge B2 First (formerly Cambridge English First (FCE))

    169 overall, with a minimum of 162 in each component

    Cambridge C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English Advanced (CAE))

    169 overall, with a minimum of 162 in each component

    Trinity Integrated Skills Test (ISE)

    ISE III, ISE III, & ISE IV with a pass in each component

    LanguageCert English language qualification

    B2 Communicator Test with an overall 39 or above and 25 or above in all skills
