Course Overview

The MSc Sound and Music Production is an innovation-led course that enables students to develop high-level skills and knowledge across a range of production practices, recognising the essential role that music and sound plays in the creative industries. With an emphasis on employability and freelance working in both the UK and international Music and Sound sectors, students work on music production, advanced recording and mixing techniques, immersive and spatial audio technologies, and composition and sound design for games, film and media. The course concludes with a final production project that enables students to specialise in their chosen area of practice, and to develop routes into industry and employment.

The course is designed with a future of work mindset, and equips students with critical thinking and leadership skills, along with the knowledge and understanding to needed to succeed in the professional and freelance music and sound sectors.

Based at our Park Campus, the course gives students the opportunity to work across our Music and Sound facilities, that include four studio suites, a dubbing theatre, music production labs, and our flagship space, the 22.2 speaker immersive audio lab.

We are part of UK Music’s ‘Music Academic Partnership’, and our students meets industry guests throughout the year, who deliver insights and masterclass workshops on the latest technologies and techniques.

Our industry networks and partnerships enable students to take up placements at music festivals, production houses and recording studios, giving them the experience they need to develop their skills portfolios and CVs, and make the step into industry practice as a working professional.

This is a highly practical course, and students attend workshops in our immersive audio lab, dubbing theatre, recording studios and production labs, where they are able to develop new skills and knowledge across the various subject areas. Students apply and refine their skill and understanding on a set of creative projects and carry out research into technological and commercial sectors, in order to align their work with the needs of the creative industries.

The final Sound and Music Production Project module, is an individual, supervisor-led project, where students apply their postgraduate knowledge and understanding and create a portfolio of projects that are aligned to their future professional and creative trajectories. Again, students make use of our industry standard facilities – and collaborate where appropriate with filmmakers, games designers, animators and other content producers – to create a body of work that will enable them to transition into professional practice and a sound and music production specialist.
