Course Overview

Study at the longest-established audio engineering education center in Scotland, with a reputation as a center of excellence. Access leading-edge equipment and recording studios, and collaborate with music students, experiencing a realistic working environment and learning technical skills while you develop your creative style. Practice recording and producing student bands, create broadcast content and work in professional theatres and live venues, as well as venues and production rooms on campus.

General Eligibility

  • Entry to year one, HNC, is 1 Scottish Higher at grade C or above, preferably including Music, Physics, Maths or English, OR

  • 1 A level at grade D or above, preferably including Music, Physics, Maths, or English OR

  • NC Sound Engineering or NC Music

  • Advanced entry to year two, DipHE, is with the HNC Sound Production, or other relevant HNC

  • Applicants with other relevant qualifications and experience will be considered on an individual basis

  • You may be required to attend an interview

What You'll Study

1 Year 1 - HNC

Mandatory units are:

  • Audio skills

  • Digital audio workstations

  • Recording and mixing

  • Skills for business

  • Sound for live event

  • Sound production graded unit 1

Options may include:

  • Acoustics (Perth)

  • Audio electronics (Perth)

  • Audio for multimedia (Perth)

  • Audio for visual art/images (Perth)

  • Creative music re-mixing (North Highland and Perth)

  • Creative project (North Highland)

  • Game audio (Perth)

  • Music history: genres, record labels, and artists (North Highland)

2 Year 2 - DipHE

Core modules are: 

  • Creative project

  • Creative industries analysis

  • Digital theory and applications

  • Analog theory and applications

You will also choose two option modules which may include:

  • Audio for cinematic and game production 1

  • Live audio production

  • Multi-track studio techniques

3 Year 3 - BSc

Core modules are:

  • Themed research project

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Audio systems theory

  • Advanced digital audio applications

You will also choose two option modules which may include:

  • Live event audio

  • Multi-track mixdown techniques

  • Audio for cinematic and game production 2

4 Year 4 - BSc (Hons)

Core modules are:​

  • Dissertation (double credit) or a research paper

  • Personal employability strategy

  • Creative honors project (double credit)

  • Creative media applications

If you choose the research paper rather than a dissertation, you will choose one further option module which may include:

  • Live production systems

  • Music production techniques

  • Sound design for film and TV

Language Requirement

  • IELTS6.0
  • TOEFL80
  • PTE58

  • Applicants must have an IELTS score- 6.0 or equivalent

  • English (PTE) Academic-58 average with 51 in each component

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) iBT4-Min 80 or above with min 18 in each section
