Course Overview

On the course, youll be taught by experts from both the sociology and criminology disciplines. Youll learn from sociology tutors who specialize in areas such as gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, the body, nationalism, and identity. Within the criminology aspect of the course, youll look at the causes of crime, disorder, and theories about how to reduce crime. Youll benefit from tutors who have a range of research specialisms, and have professional experience working with offenders, victims, and crime-prevention agencies, giving you unique insights into real-life experiences. On both the sociology and criminology aspects of the course, you will be able to choose topics and develop your understanding in areas that interest you. Youll have the opportunity to go on a work placement in your second year, giving you the chance to put what youve learned into practice, you could also make some useful contacts in the industry too. Previous students have worked with community organizations, the voluntary sector, youth offending teams with the police, and within national and local government. You may have the opportunity to study abroad for a term in your second year. You'll also be eligible for student membership of the British Sociological Association (BSA), which could help you stand out from other candidates when it comes to finding employment.

General Eligibility

An Honours degree (2:1 or above) in a relevant subject Or an academic reference indicating you are expected to obtain an Honours degree (2:1 or above) GCSE English Language and Maths (or equivalent) at grade 4 or above, or grade C or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme You also need a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance prior to registration

Part Time Work Details

20 Hours of Work permit weekly for international students.

Language Requirement

  • The minimum for IELTS is 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.
