Course Overview

Music and journalism are two very exciting and creative industries. This degree brings them together, allowing you to combine your passions for sound, social media, and the written word. Well teach you core skills in writing, video and audio production, and creating social content, as part of a professional, digital mindset, which you can apply to a range of music and media careers. Youll think about fans, the lifeblood of music, and the power they have in shaping artists and genres €“ as well as learning about the wider world of music, media, film, and culture. Youll learn music journalism across a range of media, from writing reviews and making podcasts, to creating videos and social media content. Our world-leading academics will help you develop a deep understanding of fandoms and media participation. Youll use our industry-standard studio and editing facilities, and get to take advantage of work experience opportunities.

1 Year 1

  • News Industries and Law

  • Digital Communication Technology

  • Digital Video and Audio Production

  • Media Writing and Narrative

2 Year 2

Core modules:

  • Researching Digital Communication, Media and Culture

  • From Studio to Social Media: Media Careers and Entrepreneurship

  • Music Fandom and Participatory Media

Option modules:

Choose up to three from a list which may include:

  • Popular Music Studies

  • Television Journalism

  • Digital Radio and Audio Production

  • Reporting and Writing

  • On-Screen Training: Becoming a Presenter

  • Promotional Culture and PR

  • Magazine Design and Production

  • Television Entertainment

3 Year 3 – optional placement year

  • Research Dissertation

  • Media Industry Project

Students who have successfully completed the optional placement year take an additional optional module in place of the Media Industry Project.

The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent.
