Course Overview

Forensic artists aid in the identification or location of victims of crime, missing persons, or human remains. They help with the identification, apprehension, or conviction of criminals. The course starts by giving you a strong foundation in anatomy, observational drawing, and anatomical illustration skills, before moving on to more specialized modules in the second semester. You will go on to learn the practical techniques involved in a range of forensic art applications including facial reconstruction, post-mortem depiction, age progression, and facial composite sketching. You will use a variety of specialist hardware, including 3D modeling software with haptic feedback styluses and 3D scanners. You will learn anatomy from Thiel embalmed cadavers and prosections. These cadavers are soft-fix, which means they retain real-to-life qualities, including realistic color, tissue quality, and flexibility.

General Eligibility

First or upper second class honors degree in art/design or related forensic/anatomical science. A portfolio of artwork demonstrating competency across both traditional and digital media. You should submit between 10-15 images including a number of examples from direct observation, such as life drawing or portrait sculpture. You will be invited to upload your portfolio after we receive your application. Relevant professional experience will be taken into account if you have no graduate qualifications.
