BA (Hons) Economics with a Modern Language

Our course gives you a thorough introduction to all aspects of economics, including micro and macroeconomics, and qualitative and mathematical research methods. Examine the decisions of individuals, the strategies of firms, and the policies of individuals to understand and challenge the standard rules of economics.

Alongside this, you also study a language, choosing from French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish, which allows you to graduate at either Proficiency or Mastery Level, spending one year of your studies abroad. Throughout your course, a growing understanding of economic concepts is matched by your increasing competence with your chosen language.

UK entry requirements

GCSE: Mathematics B/5

A-levels: ABB.

If Portuguese is taken as the major language, A Level pass (or equivalent) in Italian, French, Spanish or Portuguese or first language level fluency in Italian, French, Romanian or Spanish is required.

BTEC: DDD.

IB: 32 points or three Higher Level certificates with 655. Either must include Standard Level Mathematics grade 5, or a minimum of 3 in Higher Level Mathematics. We will accept grade 5 in either Standard Level Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Standard Level Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation.

We are also happy to consider a combination of separate IB Diploma Programmes at both Higher and Standard Levels. Please note that Maths in the IB is not required if you have already achieved GCSE Maths at grade B/5 or above or 5 in IB Middle Years Maths.

To study Portuguese as your major language, you need a pass in Higher Level Italian, French, Spanish or Portuguese or fluency in Italian, French, Romanian or Spanish.

Access to HE Diploma: 15 Level 3 credits at Distinction and 30 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on the subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided.
