Course Overview

Build a career within the health and social care sector with UWSs BA (Hons) Integrated Health & Social Care program. This program reflects the changing environment within health and social care. It will allow you to explore the health and social care sector in response to changing demographics and the integration of services. The program recognizes the shift in services, from both a national and international perspective, and how they are moving towards prevention, person-centredness, enablement and empowerment of individuals, and support within peoples homes. Central to the program is valuing the role that all staff play in the implementation and delivery of integrated services. This program is the first of its kind in Scotland and is specifically designed as a progression or articulation route for those candidates, who have a relevant Further Education college qualification, looking to strengthen their knowledge, skills, and career in the rapidly changing environment of integrated health and social care provision. Articulation into year two or three is available for candidates with an appropriate HNC or HND.

General Eligibility

Our Minimum Entry Requirements are applicable to those applicants who have not had an equal opportunity to demonstrate their academic ability at school or college and are known as ‘widening access’ applicants. We also sometimes refer to this type of applicant as receiving a ‘contextual’ offer. We may be able to provide you with a contextual offer if you fall into one of the categories below:

  • You have been in care (care-experienced/care-leaver)

  • You are a young carer

  • government-recognizedecognised asylum or refugee status

  • You are estranged from your family or guardians

  • You live in a SIMD decile 1-4 (SIMD20/40)* Scottish postcode area

Part Time Work Details

20 hours per week.

What You'll Study

1 Year 1

In Year 2 you will complete five core modules, one of which will be work-related, and a specific module related to health and social care. You will receive a broad introduction to the complex health and social care needs of individuals and the skills to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of public services. You will study the policy, practice, ethical and socio-economic factors that influence health and social welfare and the integration of public services.

Core modules include:

  • Integrating Health and Social Care

  • Dimensions of Health

  • Assessment and Enablement

  • Person-centredness

  • Politics and Policy in Health and Social Care

  • Work Related Learning 1

LEARNING AND TEACHING:

Scheduled Learning: 40%

Independent study: 60%

2 Year 3

In Year 3 you will complete five modules, including a work-based learning module. You will develop a professional attitude, leadership, and management skills. You will learn how to contribute effectively to evidence-based decision-making processes, with the rights and respect for individual service users at heart.

Core modules include:

  • Critical Research Appraisal

  • Quality and Leadership (40 credits)

  • Managing in the Public Sector (School of Business & Creative IndWork-related

  • Work related learning 2

  • Contemporary Issues in Health and Social Welfare

LEARNING AND TEACHING:

Scheduled Learning: 30%

Independent study: 70%

3 Year 4

In Year 4 you will complete four core modules and one optional module. You will also complete a research dissertation in a specialist area of health and social care policy and practice.

Core modules include:

  • The Honours Dissertation (40 credits)

  • Supporting FamWork-Related

  • Work Related Learning 3

  • Effective teaching in practice

  • Option module from university portfolio

Independent study: 75%
