Course Overview

Take your first steps in your career as a professional environmental health officer with UWSs BSc (Hons) Environmental Health with Professional Practice program. This program has been developed with input from industry experts, local authorities, and the Society of Chief Environmental Health Officers in Scotland. Youll explore how the natural and built environment impacts human health and learn how to keep people safe and healthy using science, technology, law, and professional practice. This program will provide you with an underpinning of the basic sciences and environmental health before allowing you to focus on specialist subjects of your choice.

General Eligibility

Our Minimum Entry Requirements are applicable to those applicants who have not had an equal opportunity to demonstrate their academic ability at school or college and are known as ‘widening access’ applicants. We also sometimes refer to this type of applicant as receiving a ‘contextual’ offer. We may be able to provide you with a contextual offer if you fall into one of the categories below:

  • You have been in care (care-experienced/care-leaver)

  • You are a young carer

  • government-recognizedecognised asylum or refugee status

  • You are estranged from your family or guardians

  • You live in a SIMD decile 1-4 (SIMD20/40)* Scottish postcode area

What You'll Study

1 Year 1

In Year 1 you will develop the knowledge and skills that will underpin more advanced study later in your degree. Year 1 topics include biodiversity of life, foundations of life, and investigation and communication.

2 Year 2

In Year 2 you will begin to specialize in environmental health, with detailed consideration of the legislative framework, managing risks, entomology and parasitology, introduction to microbiological analysis, health and hygiene, and environmental protection.

ASSESSMENT:

3 Year 3

In Year 3 you will undertake a 39-week placement with a local authority (professional practice 1) and a module on food inspection and food safety.

4 Year 4

In Year 4 you will complete modules in advanced food inspection, housing, acoustics and health, public health microbiology, and a detailed study of pollution control. You will also undertake the second placement of 9 weeks with a local authority (professional practice 2). You will also complete a supervised research dissertation in a subject area of your choice.
