Course Overview

It is the combination of technical skill and passion for the arts that makes this unique MA perfect for those from both a science-based and arts background. Integrating a mix of fine art, science, and forensic techniques, you will study a range of subjects including studio and work-based practice, conservation theory, science, technical examination, preventive conservation, and research training skills. This Conservation of Fine Art MA is employment specific and provides you with the highly specialized knowledge and techniques which are essential to a career in art conservation. During years one or two you will have the exciting opportunity to take a placement in the UK or abroad, in order to broaden your cultural perspective and enhance your learning experience. Students have so far gained local, national, and international placements, ranging from; the Bowes Museum, the Guild Hall London, the Tate Modern, and the British Museum and the Museum of Australia. While studying our MA in Art Conservation, you will be among a unique cohort of students choosing to study for Northumbria Universitys Conservation of Fine Art MA, as the only Master of Arts course in the UK that specializes in the conservation of Easel Painting and Works of Art on Paper. Studying for this two-year degree makes for fascinating study and calls for a special kind of person with both scientific and artistic ability. We will expect applications from students with a wide range of academic backgrounds, from either end of the spectrum. This could be from the creative branches of the arts and humanities to the methodical and detail-specific fields of chemistry and physics.

General Eligibility

A minimum of a 2:2 honors degree, usually in chemistry, physics, art history, or fine art, although applicants from other related fields will also be considered. Applicants with science backgrounds must have an interest in learning about practical art, and arts graduates should have a minimum grade B GCSE in Science or may choose to complete a specialist science course (such as Chemistry for Conservators run by IAP in London). This will strengthen their application. Applicants are required to have sound color vision, manual dexterity, logical thought, and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to changing practical situations. Applicants should also appreciate the integrity of works of art and have a sensitivity of approach, along with a calm temperament and infinite patience.

Part Time Work Details

20 Hours of Work permit weekly for international students.

Language Requirement

  • International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or approved equivalent*).
