Course Overview

The MA in TESOL provides you with a thorough grounding in key theoretical and practical issues relevant to the needs of professionals in an increasingly global and competitive field. Many of our graduates have secured initial teaching positions or taken on additional roles in existing positions in a wide range of teaching contexts.

The University of Leicester provides further support to teachers through the School of Education, where we offer a range of professional development opportunities for practising teachers, including CPD courses and Masters's degrees.

This is a rigorous qualification which provides you with strong all-around skills development and up-to-date subject knowledge. It is highly valued by educational employers and will help to raise your profile when seeking to launch or advance your career as a language teaching professional.

This postgraduate degree will provide you with the basic practical skills you need to enter a language classroom with confidence and enhance your subject knowledge of the English language. You will develop your language teaching ability at a range of levels, in different cultural and institutional contexts. You will also have an opportunity to develop an understanding of professional issues related to English language teaching and learning.

You will be supported by a personal tutor who, where possible, will remain with you throughout the course, and you will also have access to the full range of university support services. Participating in the learning activities and accessing the academic support services available to the n/aUniversity of Leicester students will also help you develop your fluency and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

General Eligibility

• 2:2 or above in a relevant subject, or equivalent.

• Some language teaching experience or previous teacher training to show your engagement with, and commitment to, teaching English as a second or foreign language.

Part Time Work Details

20 hours of work permit weekly for international students.

Language Requirement

• IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with at least 6.0 in each component score. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.
