The study of political science is the study of political life in different contexts—institutions, social movements, power relations, elections, political culture, ideas, and war. At UMass Amherst, the Department of Political Science emphasizes issues central to public life, such as democracy, citizenship, power, inequality, institutions, and governance. Students at all levels hone their ability to articulate clear, sound, and compelling arguments through discourse and research. A degree in political science is widely applicable and can lend itself to any career where strong critical thought and communication is in demand.
