Course Overview
Industrial designers are mainly employed either in the manufacturing industry or in the professional, scientific, and technical services industry to provide specialized design services. Retail and wholesale trade are other key industries for employment.
Employment of industrial designers has grown in Ontario over the last few years and is expected to remain favorable during the forecast period. These professionals conceptualize and produce designs for a variety of manufactured goods, such as toys, cameras, medical devices, and other industrial products. As such, the level of manufacturing activity and consumer spending will strongly influence job prospects. The number of goods produced and sold increased overall in the manufacturing industry recently. This includes office furniture and fixtures manufacturing, which employs a sizable share of these designers.
