Course Overview

In today’s competitive and highly interconnected world, all businesses must deal with significant levels of complexity and need engineers that can create innovative solutions to complex problems, by managing both the whole system (systemic) and the detailed engineering (systematic) aspects of the challenges. Systems engineering is an essential organisational competence for industries that deal with very large, complex, multi-disciplinary products and services. We have been teaching Systems Engineering since 1992 and our master’s was designed, and has evolved, in close collaboration with industry. Our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills to manage end-to-end engineering of complex systems to ensure smooth and efficient delivery. Our programme combines a strong emphasis on model-based systems engineering with the business considerations needed for delivering and managing high quality systems. The curriculum is aligned to the industry-standard systems engineering competencies of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). It is also compliant with the level 7 standard (STO107) of the Institute for Apprentices and Technical Education, so that it is available to employees of participating companies, who can then benefit from Apprenticeship Levy funding. Who should study this programme? Our Systems Engineering MSc is suitable for recent graduates and professional engineers as a conversion for those who have specialised in a traditional discipline but are now expected to understand, operate, develop and integrate entire systems that are not only increasingly complex, but rapidly changing. It is needed in sectors as diverse as energy, transport, defence, telecommunications, health, infrastructure and many more. The part-time and apprenticeship versions are popular with employees growing into roles with additional responsibilities.
