MRes Philosophy

The MRes Philosophy at Birkbeck University of London is a one-year, full-time or two-year, part-time research degree that provides an opportunity for students to develop advanced philosophical skills and knowledge. The program focuses on various areas of philosophy, including metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, and aesthetics, among others. This MRes Philosophy offers research-based training in philosophy at post-master's level and serves as a foundation for starting an individual Ph.D. project. This MRes is ideal for self-motivated, committed students who already have a good philosophy qualification and wish to progress to pure research in some area of the subject. The program will give you a firm philosophical grounding and mastery of complex, specialized areas of philosophical study, enabling you to engage critically and reflectively with current philosophical debates. You will also be equipped with the essential research skills you need to proceed to Ph.D. research. You will complete a substantial supervised research project in a shorter time than that required for a Ph.D. Graduates go into careers in management, politics, recruitment, and journalism. Possible professions include further/higher education lecturer, secondary school teacher, or Civil Service fast streamer. This degree can also be useful in becoming a local government officer, marketing executive, or recruitment consultant.

At least a second-class honors degree (2:2), or equivalent, not necessarily in philosophy, and a sample of written work prior to the interview, in addition to a research proposal of up to 1000 words.
