Course Overview

By studying the English language in-depth, you will develop critical awareness and gain invaluable communication, analytical and critical skills for your future working life. Your first year of studying the English language at Aston will give you a broad introduction to language and meaning, to the influence of form and context, and to the role of language in society. In the second year, alongside core modules, you can pick the elective modules that interest you the most €“ such as Language in the News Media, the Language of the Law, Stylistics, and Creative Writing. These modules are designed to equip you to describe the features of spoken and written language in technical detail, as well as collecting, managing, and working with linguistic data. Through practical sessions, you will develop the skills to teach English as a foreign language and understand the roles, techniques, and dynamics of the classroom. In the final year, you can choose from a wide range of elective modules to suit your interests and/or career plans, whether you see your future in education, business, law, or elsewhere. You will also produce a substantial piece of individual work in the form of a dissertation on an agreed topic of your choice.

General Eligibility

BBC (standard offer) BCC (with EPQ or Core Maths minimum grade B) CCC (contextual offer*) IB - 29 points overall with grades 5, 5, 4 in 3 higher level subjects. Standard level Maths and English grade 5 required in lieu of GCSE English and Maths grade C/4.

  • IELTS Overall 6.0, Reading, Writing Listening, Speaking 5.5. Financial requirement You’ll need to show you have enough money to support yourself - unless you’ve been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months on the date of your application. How much money you need depends on where you will be studying. You’ll need either: £1,334 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses outside London £1,023 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses inside London If you’re applying for the Doctorate Extension Scheme, and you’ve been in the UK for less than 12 months, you need to prove you have a total of £2,668 for courses in London, or a total of £2,046 for courses outside London. If you’re boarding at a residential independent school, you’ll need to pay boarding fees instead. The amount you need to pay will be on your CAS. London means the City of London and the 32 London boroughs.
