Study in UK Without IELTS 2027: Universities & Visa

Yes, you can study in UK without IELTS in 2027. IELTS is widely accepted, but it is not the only way to prove your English.

Depending on the university and course, you may be able to use PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo English Test, LanguageCert, Oxford ELLT, Cambridge English qualifications, previous English-medium study or, in some cases, a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate.

There is one important catch.

Getting university admission without IELTS and meeting the English requirement for a UK Student visa are not always the same thing. At degree level, an eligible Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself. Other study routes may require a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test.

So the real question is not simply, “Can I avoid IELTS?”

It is: which English route will work for my university, course and visa?

Can You Study in UK Without IELTS in 2027?

The short answer is yes.

Many UK universities publish alternatives to IELTS, although the accepted evidence and required score vary by course.

You may qualify through an alternative English test. Another university might consider an English-medium qualification or school English result. A third may accept MOI from selected institutions or ask you to complete its own assessment.

If you are comparing several options, first check how UK universities assess different forms of English evidence. It is much safer than choosing a test first and a university later.

Here’s the thing: “without IELTS” does not mean “without English proficiency”.

You still need to show that you can follow lectures, write assignments, participate in seminars and complete your course in English.

A mildly surprising point is that taking IELTS unnecessarily can sometimes make an application more complicated rather than stronger. If your university already accepts your existing English qualification, another test may add cost without solving a real problem.

Choose the evidence the university actually wants.

UK Universities Without IELTS in 2027: Options to Check

There is no trustworthy universal list of UK universities without IELTS where every applicant can enter every programme without the test.

Policies vary by course, qualification and nationality.

A better shortlist is made up of universities that currently publish recognised alternatives to IELTS.

Policies checked: August 2026

Published alternatives/examples

What you should check

University of Greenwich

PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo, LanguageCert Academic SELT, Oxford ELLT and other qualifications

Required scores change according to the course; Oxford ELLT is currently not available to Bangladeshi applicants

Sheffield Hallam University

TOEFL, Duolingo, Pearson PTE, Oxford ELLT and LanguageCert

The course page determines the required IELTS-equivalent level

Bangor University

Duolingo, PTE Academic, TOEFL, LanguageCert, Oxford ELLT, Cambridge and other tests

Scores vary according to course level and English requirement

Birmingham City University

PTE, TOEFL and several other recognised English qualifications

All component scores must meet the requirement; some online test versions are not accepted

University of Chester

PTE, TOEFL, Duolingo, LanguageCert, Cambridge and other qualifications

Some online qualifications are restricted to certain applicant groups

University of Portsmouth

TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo, Trinity and Cambridge English

Foundation and pre-sessional applicants need to pay particular attention to UKVI requirements

Robert Gordon University

IELTS alternatives for postgraduate taught courses, including recognised equivalent tests

Most postgraduate taught courses normally require an IELTS-equivalent 6.5, although individual courses may differ

For example, Sheffield Hallam currently lists a Duolingo score of 105 as equivalent to its standard IELTS 6.0 requirement and Pearson 64 for the same level. Bangor publishes separate equivalencies for Duolingo, PTE, LanguageCert and Oxford ELLT.

Greenwich also publishes precise alternative-test equivalents rather than simply saying that it accepts “other tests”.

That level of detail matters.

Do not apply because a blog lists a university as “IELTS free”. Open the university's current English-language page, then check your specific course.

If your main route is previous English-medium study, separately check whether your academic background may support an MOI-based application.

Admission vs Visa - The Rulebook

Study in UK Without IELTS: Admission vs Student Visa

This distinction can save you from an expensive mistake.

For university admission, each institution sets its own academic and English-language requirements.

For the Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration applies immigration rules.

Under the current Student visa English-language rules, applicants normally need English equivalent to:

Course level

Required English level

Degree level or above

CEFR B2

Below degree level

CEFR B1

For degree-level or higher study, an eligible Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself. GOV.UK states that the provider may ask you to take a different test rather than requiring a SELT in every case.

Think about it this way.

A master's applicant whose university accepts an appropriate English qualification may not need IELTS simply to satisfy the Student visa English requirement.

A student entering a below-degree pathway may face a different situation and could need a UKVI-approved SELT.

Same destination. Different route.

UK Study Visa Without IELTS in 2027

Yes, a UK study visa without IELTS can be possible.

But you cannot simply skip the English requirement.

If your route requires a Secure English Language Test, you must use an approved provider and test.

The current UKVI SELT guidance lists approved providers including IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT and Pearson, with the available provider list differing slightly between tests taken inside and outside the UK.

This is why ordinary university acceptance and SELT status should not be mixed together.

For example, a university may accept Duolingo for admission. That does not turn the Duolingo English Test into a standalone UKVI-approved SELT.

Similarly, PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI serve different purposes when a SELT is specifically required.

If your course or visa route needs one, understand how a UKVI-approved English test works before booking anything.

IELTS Alternatives Accepted by UK Universities

There is no single best IELTS alternative for every applicant.

The right choice depends on what your university accepts and what your visa route requires.

Pre-sessional English

Applicants below direct-entry level

Adds tuition cost and time

Students considering Pearson can compare where PTE is accepted for UK admission. If an online test is more practical, check where Duolingo currently works.

Oxford ELLT is another option worth comparing through universities using ELLT as English evidence, while some applicants may encounter other OI Digital Institute English routes.

Never choose a test because it is quick or cheap alone.

Choose it because your target university accepts it.

Which Route Should You Choose?

If your previous degree was taught in English

Check MOI first.

Ask your previous institution for an official document showing your name, qualification, study dates and confirmation that it taught and assessed the programme in English.

A letter saying only that “the student studied here” is not enough.

Then ask the target university whether it accepts that evidence for your course and country.

If you already have strong school English results

Check the university's country-specific requirements before paying for another test.

Some institutions accept particular school-level English qualifications from selected countries. Others do not.

If the university rejects your MOI

Move on.

Do not keep submitting essentially the same evidence and expecting a different result.

Choose a recognised alternative test from that university's current list.

If you are slightly below the English requirement

A pre-sessional English course may make more sense than repeatedly retaking an exam.

Birmingham City University, for instance, currently publishes January 2027 on-campus pre-sessional options costing £2,140 for six weeks or £3,570 for ten weeks. Its on-campus route requires an approved SELT.

That is the kind of practical detail you should compare before deciding.

Study in UK Without IELTS from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal or Nigeria

Students from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Nigeria can potentially study in UK without IELTS, but the route is not identical for every nationality.

Bangladesh

Bangladeshi applicants should check MOI and alternative-test policies carefully.

Country-specific restrictions do exist. Greenwich, for example, currently states that Oxford ELLT is not available to Bangladesh applicants on its published English-requirements table.

That is exactly why generic “IELTS-free university” lists can cause problems.

India

Indian applicants should check both previous English-medium study and recognised school English qualifications. Some institutions publish specific equivalencies for Indian qualifications, while others prefer a standard English test.

Pakistan

Pakistani applicants have several alternative-test routes at selected universities. Birmingham City University, for example, currently lists PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo, Cambridge English, LanguageCert and Oxford ELLT among the evidence it may accept for applicants from Pakistan.

Nepal

Applicants with an English-medium degree should investigate MOI, but do not assume every UK university will accept it. Keep an approved alternative test as a backup.

Nigeria

Nigerian students may also find institutions that consider recognised local English qualifications alongside international tests. Check the country page and individual course rather than relying on university-wide assumptions.

Your nationality does not determine whether you can study without IELTS on its own.

Your qualification, university, course and English evidence together determine the answer.

UK Universities Without IELTS for Masters and Undergraduate Students

Master's applicants often have a useful advantage: they may already have completed a degree in English.

That can open routes through MOI, previous academic qualifications or alternative tests, depending on the institution.

For example, the University of Portsmouth says degrees taught solely in English in non-majority-English-speaking countries may be considered on a case-by-case basis for some programmes. Its MA International Relations for January 2027 lists international tuition at £18,600, giving applicants a useful real-world cost reference as well.

Undergraduate applicants are more likely to rely on recognised school English results or an approved test.

Professional courses can also be stricter.

Nursing, pharmacy, social work, medicine and other programmes involving significant professional communication may require higher English scores than a standard business or computing degree.

Always check the course page after checking the university's general policy.

January 2027 and September 2027 Intake

For new applicants, 2027 is now the useful planning horizon.

January 2027

If you want a January start, focus on courses that genuinely offer winter entry.

Then check:

  • English-language evidence
  • application and deposit deadlines
  • outstanding academic conditions
  • CAS preparation
  • required funds
  • visa timing

You can narrow the search through courses and universities that offer January entry.

Do this before booking an English test. There is no benefit in meeting an English requirement for a programme that does not run in January.

September 2027

September 2027 applicants have more preparation time.

Use it to shortlist courses, prepare English evidence, compare tuition fees and organise your finances rather than rushing later.

If September is your preferred intake, compare the main September-entry options while you still have time to change strategy.

Cost of Studying in UK Without IELTS in 2027

Avoiding IELTS does not make UK study free or dramatically cheaper.

It may simply remove the cost of IELTS if you already hold acceptable English evidence.

UCAS currently estimates average international tuition at around £22,000 per year for undergraduate study and about £17,109 per year for postgraduate study, although actual fees vary substantially by course and university.

For a more practical budget, separate tuition from immigration costs.

Cost

UCAS undergraduate application fee for the 2027 cycle

£34.50

UK Student visa application fee

£558

Immigration Health Surcharge for students

£776 per year

Required living funds in London

£1,529 per month, up to 9 months

Required living funds outside London

£1,171 per month, up to 9 months

UCAS confirms that the £34.50 fee for the 2027 cycle covers up to five undergraduate university or college choices.

The Student visa fee is currently £558, following the April 2026 Home Office fee update.

The student IHS rate is £776 per year.

For maintenance funds, that means a maximum of:

  • £13,761 for nine months in London
  • £10,539 for nine months outside London

before adding any unpaid tuition amount required for your visa application.

If you use personal funds, pay close attention to the financial-evidence rules and prepare your UK visa bank documents correctly.

A strong offer does not rescue weak financial evidence.

Can You Get a UK Scholarship Without IELTS?

Yes, potentially.

If a university accepts another form of English evidence for admission, IELTS does not automatically become necessary simply because you apply for a scholarship.

Scholarship rules are separate, though, so always check the award itself.

For a concrete 2027 example, Sheffield Hallam University's current Vice-Chancellor's Award offers eligible students from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka a £3,000 first-year tuition bursary for January 2027. Eligible Nigerian students can also receive £3,000.

The University of Portsmouth also publishes a £2,500 first-year fee reduction under its Vice Chancellor's Global Development Scholarship for eligible students from countries including Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Nigeria and Pakistan for January 2027 entry.

Those are useful savings.

They should not, however, decide your university choice by themselves.

Check the full tuition fee after the award.

Documents You May Need

Applying without IELTS does not radically change the normal admissions process.

You will generally prepare your passport, academic certificates and transcripts, English evidence, references and any course-specific documents.

If you rely on MOI, include a properly issued certificate. If you use a test, submit a verifiable result.

Depending on the programme and visa stage, you may also need a CV, portfolio, ATAS certificate, TB certificate, financial evidence and finally your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.

The CAS matters more than many applicants realise.

It links your offer, sponsorship and visa process. Make sure you understand how your university has assessed your English before you reach that stage.

How to Apply to Study in UK Without IELTS

Start with the course.

Not the test.

Choose programmes that fit your academic background and career goal. Then open each course's English requirements and identify the evidence it accepts.

If your existing degree, school qualification or MOI works, use it.

If it does not, compare the approved alternatives and select the most practical one.

Submit your application, meet any remaining academic or English conditions, check deposit and refund terms, then confirm the CAS process before preparing your Student visa application.

For the wider admissions journey, you can plan the rest of your UK application as an international student.

That order avoids unnecessary testing and unnecessary spending.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The biggest mistake is assuming that one university policy applies to every course.

It does not.

Another is treating MOI as an automatic UKVI exemption. MOI may help with university admission, but your actual visa position depends on your course level, sponsor and how the university confirms your English.

Students also confuse an alternative university test with a SELT.

Then there is outdated information. English-test policies change, score tables change and universities sometimes restrict particular test formats or nationalities.

Finally, do not pay a large deposit simply because you have an offer.

Understand the English condition, refund terms, CAS requirements and funding position first.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs About Studying in UK Without IELTS

Can I study in UK without IELTS in 2027?

Yes. Many universities accept alternatives such as PTE, TOEFL, Duolingo, LanguageCert, Oxford ELLT, recognised previous qualifications or MOI in selected cases. You still have to satisfy the university's English requirement.

Can I get a UK student visa without IELTS?

Yes, in appropriate cases. Degree-level Higher Education Providers can assess English at the required level themselves. If your route requires a SELT, you must use an approved test.

Which UK universities accept students without IELTS?

Universities including Greenwich, Sheffield Hallam, Bangor, Birmingham City, Chester, Portsmouth and Robert Gordon publish alternatives to IELTS. The exact requirement depends on the course and applicant.

Is MOI accepted in the UK?

Some universities consider a Medium of Instruction certificate, particularly where a previous qualification was taught in English. Acceptance varies by university, country, institution and course.

Can I use PTE instead of IELTS for UK study?

Many universities accept PTE Academic. If your visa route requires a SELT, check whether you specifically need PTE Academic UKVI.

Is Duolingo accepted by UK universities?

Yes, selected universities accept Duolingo for certain applicants and programmes. Greenwich, Sheffield Hallam, Bangor and Chester currently publish Duolingo routes, although restrictions and required scores vary.

Can I study a master's in UK without IELTS?

Potentially, yes. Master's applicants may qualify through an accepted alternative test, previous English-medium study, MOI or another recognised qualification.

Can Bangladeshi students study in UK without IELTS?

Yes, where the chosen university accepts suitable alternative English evidence for the student's course and background. Check country restrictions carefully rather than assuming every test is available.

Which UK universities accept students without an English interview?

Interview rules vary by university and applicant. Some students who already meet the accepted English requirement will not need a separate language interview, while other universities may use an interview or credibility assessment.

Are there UK universities without IELTS and application fees?

Some institutions allow direct applications without a separate university application charge, particularly at postgraduate level. Undergraduate applicants using UCAS should currently budget £34.50 for the 2027 application cycle unless a waiver applies.

What is the cheapest way to study in UK without IELTS?

If your university accepts English evidence you already hold, such as an eligible previous qualification or MOI, that may avoid the cost of another test. But compare total tuition, scholarship, visa and living costs rather than choosing a university because the English route appears cheaper.

Final Advice

You can study in UK without IELTS in 2027. The safest route is not to search for a university that simply says “no IELTS”.

Choose your course first.

Check exactly how that course accepts English evidence. Use your existing qualification or MOI if it genuinely qualifies. Otherwise, select a recognised alternative such as PTE, TOEFL, Duolingo, LanguageCert or Oxford ELLT.

Then check the visa requirement separately.

Do those things in that order and you avoid the most common problem in an IELTS-free application: getting an admission route that does not fit the rest of your plan.

If you are still shortlisting institutions, compare your wider UK study options before paying for a test or university deposit.
