Course Overview

The course intends to produce secondary English teachers who are reflective practitioners, who have a love of the subject, and will be:

enthusiastic and confident in the classroom

pedagogically skillful and adaptable

specialists in the teaching of English

aware of how young people learn English

knowledgeable across all areas of English – literature and language

able to see their subject in the context of the whole curriculum, and understand how the skills of English can transfer across all subjects

competent in a number of areas that cross secondary school curriculum boundaries, and able to see English in the wider context - contributing to pupils' personal, social, moral, spiritual, and cultural development

able to work effectively as part of a team

able to critically examine issues raised within the study of the subject

prepared for teaching English in the 21st Century

We are here to help you plan your future, make the most of your time at University, and to enhance your employability. We provide access to part-time jobs, and extra-curricular employability-enhancing workshops and offer practical one-to-one help with career planning, including help with CVs, applications, and mock interviews. We also deliver group sessions on career planning within each course and we have a wide range of extensive information covering graduate jobs and postgraduate study.

Students and graduates of the University of Chester can use our services free of charge for up to two years after graduating.

General Eligibility

Applicants will normally:

  • hold or be expected to gain a minimum 2:1 honors degree

  • have GCSE grade C/grade 4 or above in English Language and Maths.

Part Time Work Details

20 hours of work permit weekly for international students.

  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 (no less than 5.5 in any band)
