The MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is designed for any graduate interested in language learning and teaching.
This course is ideal if you want to acquire an in-depth knowledge of English and how to teach it and explore new developments in language teaching, such as technology in the classroom.
The MA in TESOL at Hull is unusual because we include a practical teaching component, with observed classroom practice an integral part of the course. As such, newcomers to teaching and experienced classroom practitioners alike can explore the role of a language teacher in the modern world.
Our programme is designed to support native/expert and developing English language users. We welcome applications from graduates with an IELTS average of at least 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in all skills.
Students joining the programme also have the opportunity to apply for the Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. The Trinity CertTESOL is an internationally recognised professional English language teaching qualification. Eligible students can study towards a practical, professional qualification simultaneously as the Master, increasing their actual classroom experience and future employability. Interested candidates will need to be assessed and interviewed for this programme separately, demonstrating a high competence in spoken and written English, whether English is their first, second or additional language.
A 2.2 Honours degree (or international equivalent). Your personal statement must clearly highlight why you are interested in this programme.
In order to ensure our students have a rich learning and student experience, most of our programmes have a mix of domestic and international students. We reserve the right to close applications early to either group, if application volumes suggest that this blend cannot be achieved. In addition, existing undergraduate students at the University of Hull have a guaranteed ‘Fast Track’ route to any postgraduate programme, subject to meeting the entry criteria (excluding Social Work).
20 hours of work permit weekly for international students.
