Mechanical engineers are involved in the design and development of almost everything we use - from nanotechnology to healthcare equipment to planes, windfarms, and even spacecraft. Hull has an excellent reputation for teaching Mechanical Engineering. We’re ranked Top 10 in the UK for Value Added*, a metric that determines how likely our students are to graduate with a 1st or 2:1. This program shares a common first year with the other engineering subjects in the Department of Engineering, making it possible for you to switch between degrees at the end of the first year if you want to choose a different pathway.
The first-year program gives you the core theoretical and practical skills you’ll need throughout your time at university and beyond. CAD, programming and control, and thermos fluids are just a few of the areas you’ll cover. The mathematics module is specifically geared toward engineering applications.
Transferable skills - teamwork, problem-solving, presentation skills, and report writing - are embedded in the program. The modules you’ll study encourage project-based learning and you’ll get the chance to manufacture and test your concepts. You’ll also take part in Global Challenge, where you’ll work in a team to tackle a design and build project.
We treat you as a trainee engineer so that by the time you graduate you’ll have gained a broad knowledge base and innovative problem-solving skills which you can then apply to a range of industries: automotive, aerospace, energy, and medical devices, to name just a few.
Many of our students take the opportunity to spend a year in industry as part of their degree, gaining valuable experience and contacts which will help them in their careers. You could be working for some of the biggest employers in the country. Companies such as Reckitt, Airbus, Virgin Media, IBM, BMW Group, Siemens, Microsoft, and Smith & Nephew.
But it’s not all study and work - there are lots of extra-curricular activities for you to get involved with as well. Become part of our Hull Electric Racing team and you could be building a single-seater racing car and competing against other students at Silverstone. There’s a robotics society and you’ll have access to our state-of-the-art FabLab, packed with 3D printers to build your prototypes.
Our courses are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Accreditation shows employers you have studied on a program that meets globally recognized standards for engineering graduates - and puts you on the pathway to Chartered Engineer status.
We are currently in the process of becoming accredited by the Women in Engineering Society, which will bring even more opportunities to network and meet and learn from experts beyond the university.

BTEC L3 National Extended Diploma: Engineering including Merit in Calculus and Further Engineering Mathematics units
OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma: Engineering including Merit in Maths for Engineers and Applied Mathematics for Engineering units
20 hours of work permit weekly for international students.
IELTS 6.0 overall, with no less than 5.5 in each skill.
