Why Choose Women's Studies?
This program will help you understand the relationship between gender and sexuality and how they impact the human social experience. And where better to study this relationship? Elmira College has a heritage and culture that's been forward-thinking from day one, as the first college for women with a course study equivalent to men's.
What Women's Studies Will Teach You
The Elmira College Women's and Gender Studies Program empowers students to be academically successful critical thinkers, feminist activists, leaders on campus, and leaders in the wider world.
This interdisciplinary program is affiliated with more than 25 faculty members. Some teach women's studies courses, while others serve as speakers, moderators, and panelists for campus events.
Students may choose to minor in women's studies, completing a minimum of 21 credits in women's studies coursework with a senior seminar in feminist issues and activism.
The Women’s Studies minor comprises 21 credit hours, six of which are fulfilled by the required WMS 1000 and WMS 4590 courses (3 credits each).
The remainder of the minor consists of 15 credit hours of electives from courses listed or cross-listed as WMS, at least 3 credits of which must be in courses at the 3000 level or higher. Independent studies approved by the Coordinator of Women’s Studies are acceptable as electives in the minor.
