BS (Hons) University Studies - Science for Secondary Teaching

The BS (Hons) University Studies - Science for Secondary Teaching program at Texas A&M University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of teaching science in secondary schools. The program focuses on developing students' knowledge and skills in areas such as instructional design, classroom management, and assessment and evaluation. Students will also learn how to incorporate technology and multimedia resources into their teaching practice, as well as how to adapt their teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse student populations. Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to enter the workforce as confident and effective science teachers.

Additional Information

The program consists of 120 credit hours, including coursework in education, biology, chemistry, and physics. Students will also complete a supervised teaching practicum in a secondary school setting. Graduates of the program are eligible to apply for certification as science teachers in Texas and other states.

This objective of this major is to provide students highly qualified in science and mathematics who are interested in a career in secondary science teaching with a broad interdisciplinary academic program and experiences that will prepare them for this career choice. The program is designed to prepare students to receive the secondary science composite certification in life, earth, and physical sciences. In particular, the courses chosen encompass the science composite areas test by the State of Texas and TExES. The degree program is a collaboration of the Colleges of Science, Geosciences, and Education and Human Development. Students in this major are also required to complete two minors including (A) Applied Learning in STEM Education and (B) Choose from Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, or Physics.

Undergraduate students who meet the following general admission requirements at the time of application are assured admission to  A&M-Central Texas:

• Minimum 2.0 cumulative transfer GPA on a 4.0 scale;

• Minimum 30 academic, college-level transferable semester hours. Applicants pursuing an Applied Science or Aviation Science degree may meet this requirement utilizing select workforce education credit from an approved Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree upon completion of 45 hours, to include all general education courses within the AAS.

• Must be eligible to return to all previously attended colleges or universities.
