Course Overview

Biology is not merely a collection of facts but a process of discovery. You'll participate actively in this process in the classroom, laboratory, and field. Each course provides a framework for examining the scientific method to master current knowledge and address the complex problems of the future. Starting in your first-year courses, you will learn approaches to science and develop your research projects.

The Biology core curriculum explores the significant disciplines and examines the diversity of life and the functional aspects of living systems. The core courses encompass a broad spectrum of biological sciences, from molecules and cells to populations and ecosystems, using evolutionary adaptation as a recurrent theme. Advanced techniques and specialized concentrations allow you to pursue areas of particular interest. We stress independence and initiative; many students participate in internships and research with faculty mentors.

Our Elmira College Biology prominent graduates have continued to work in biomedical research, academics, fisheries, marine ecology, private industry, medical school, veterinary school, physical therapy, as physician assistants, in K-12 education, as well as state and federal government. In addition, alums frequently return to campus to talk with our current students about potential career paths.
