This English Language with Creative Writing course provides a fascinating opportunity to study two combination of distinct but related subjects. You will explore and examine how English works, why and how it is used, where it has come from while also developing skills in writing in a variety of forms. You will also study the structure of language and how it is used in society and explore creative writing in small groups or workshops led by research experts and published writers.
The English language component of this degree will give you the opportunity to learn about the grammatical structure of English (e.g., how words and sentences are formed), how meaning is made, interpreted and extended across whole discourses, how sounds are formed, produced, and understood, and how language use varies across speakers and groups and how it changes over time. You will also explore the history of English, the development and emergence English dialects and World Englishes, how English is used in society (e.g., how socio-cultural variables shape the use of English) and the role of English in society, in education and as a global lingua franca.
You will also develop with us as a creative writer by learning about writing in different genres, styles and modes. You will get the chance to share and discuss your own work with others, both staff and students, and grow as part of the university’s welcoming community of writers. There is also a vibrant cultural scene both in the university and beyond, with literary societies and groups for you to join as well as ways to share your creative work with a wider audience.

This English Language with Creative Writing course will be taught by a combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials and/or seminars, depending on the module, level and subject. You will choose 120 credits of modules each year relating to English Language and Creative Writing each year (80 credits in English Language and 40 credits in Creative Writing).In English Language, you will start by learning the foundational knowledge and skills required to study in these fields, before later being able to choose the areas, periods and/or disciplines you would like to specialize in. Modules are assessed on the basis of different kinds of coursework, including essays, reports, oral presentations, tests, exams, data analysis, etc. You will do a dissertation in your final year which represents an original project which you will undertake under the supervision of a research-active member of staff.In Creative Writing, you will be taught primarily via interactive group classes. The initial part of your course will introduce you to fundamental aspects of creative writing, such as how to create works of poetry and prose, and later you will be able to explore writing in different genres, and will get the opportunity to e.g. consider the social and cultural role of the writer, examine creative writing in its community context, contrast creative writing between different cultures, and so on.

If you do not meet the English Language requirements to enter the International Incorporated Bachelors or the International Incorporated Masters, BUIC offers you a range of Pre-sessional English Programmes which you can take before you start these courses.
If you have an IELTS of 5.0 (with no component below 4.5), you will be offered a 6-week Pre-sessional English course immediately preceding your entry to the IYZ.
If you have an IELTS of 4.5 (with no component below 4.0), you will be offered a 12-week Pre-Sessional English course immediately preceding your entry to the IYZ.
