Why Choose Communication Sciences and Disorders?
A bachelor's degree in Speech-Language Disabilities or Speech and Hearing Science prepares you for graduate study for a highly rewarding career in an allied health profession. Either major will prepare you for advanced study to become a speech-language pathologist or an audiologist. Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology are among the fastest-growing professions in the United States.
What Communication Sciences and Disorders Will Teach You
The course of study in Communication Sciences and Disorders will teach you foundational information about communication disorders and the special populations we serve. Students in the CSD program will learn diagnostics, assessment, intervention, and treatment, for individuals with difficulty communicating. We also help students to develop critical thinking skills, clinical decision analysis, and effective communication when working in an interdisciplinary medical team. Our program focuses not only on classroom instruction but also requires all junior and senior-level students to provide clinical services with the assistance and direction of a clinical supervisor.
This major prepares you for graduate study in either Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology. A unique feature of this major is a requirement to complete an entire semester of work in a secondary school working directly with a licensed, certified Speech Language Pathologist. This School-based Clinical experience is full-time, and students take no additional classes while participating in this experience (12 credit hours). Upon successful completion of the SLD major, you'll be prepared to sit for a New York State provisional certification examination, which allows you to work as a Teacher of Students with Speech-Language Disabilities (TSSLD) in New York State. Some students may choose to work in a school-based setting before the beginning graduate study. It is important to note that the provisional certification is only valid for five years post your baccalaureate graduation. Also, you can easily change between the SLD and SPH majors.
