Course Overview

If you are interested in a career that involves working with people in the sports industry, in the maintenance or improvement of their sporting performance, then BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation is the course for you.

There is a growing range of employment opportunities for people who want to work in sports therapy. There is also increasing appreciation that people who are involved in sports – whether at professional, amateur, or recreational level – need appropriate and specific support to avoid injury, treat injury, and plan and provide appropriate post-injury rehabilitation.

This course combines both the scientific knowledge and practical skills necessary to become an accomplished sports therapist. You will be taught by our expert team of sports therapy and rehabilitation professionals and have access to excellent on-campus sports facilities. In addition, work placement opportunities will enable you to relate your acquired theoretical knowledge to real-life practices.

General Eligibility

  • Entry to year one, HNC, is 2 Scottish Highers at grade C or above plus a core skills profile at SCQF level 5 with communication at SCQF level 6, or equivalent OR

  • 2 A levels at grade D or above plus relevant GCSE equivalent core skills

  • Alternatively, National Qualification at SCQF level 6, S/NVQ level 3, or equivalent, in an appropriate subject area, eg health or sport

  • Applicants with relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis

  • This is a Category 1 PVG course: PVG Scheme membership is required to achieve target qualification successfully, where there is guaranteed contact with vulnerable groups in key elements of the course.

What You'll Study

1 Year 1 - HNC

Subjects may include:

  • Basic objective and subjective assessment

  • Clinical and team experience 1

  • Clinical sports massage

  • First aid for sport and fitness

  • Flexibility training

  • Functional anatomy

  • Pathology and etiology of sports injury

  • Prevention and management of sports injury

  • Research investigation in sport

  • Sports massage for events and special populations

  • Sports therapy: anatomy and physiology

  • Sports therapy: exercise principles and testing

  • Sports therapy: graded unit 1

  • Sports therapy: professional standards

2 Year 2 - HND

Subjects may include:

  • Biomechanics and movement patterns

  • Clinical and team experience 2

  • Clinical assessment of sports injuries

  • Electrotherapy

  • Functional anatomy 2

  • Graded unit 2

  • Health promotion

  • Plan and deliver exercise-based sports rehabilitation

  • Psychology of Sports Injury

  • Sports fitness and return to participation criteria

  • Sports taping

3 Year 3 - BSc

You will study the following core modules:

  • Research methods (sport)

  • The professional practitioner - ethics, policy and practice

  • Manual therapy 1

  • Design, manage, and evaluate human fitness and physical performance OR Work placement: industry-specific skills (recommended choice)

You will also choose one option module which may include:

  • Sports nutrition and dietary considerations

  • Applied sport and exercise psychology

  • Sports and exercise science: a critical analysis

  • Strength and conditioning

  • Analyzing physical activity, lifestyle, and adherence

4 Year 4 - BSc (Hons)

You will study the following core modules:

  • Manual therapy 2

  • Advanced sports rehabilitation

  • Small business planning

You will also choose one optional module which may include:

  • Delivering physical activities and sports development programs

  • Work placement: professional practice

  • Physical activity for all

  • Sports and exercise psychology

  • Legal issues in sport and fitness

You must also complete a dissertation (sport).

Applicants must have an IELTS score- 6.0 or equivalent

English (PTE) Academic-58 average with 51 in each component

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) iBT4-Min 80 or above with min 18 in each section
