Course Overview

The Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is the most widely recognized UK postgraduate award and is transferable. It is accepted, across the UK and internationally, as an assurance that the candidate has achieved the high standard expected for entry into the teaching profession.

If you are passionate about teaching this course will equip you with the skills to provide secondary school students across the 11-16 age range plus post-16 enhancement. The course is designed to provoke thought, challenge assumptions, and help develop you as a reflective practitioner of the subject so that you can enter the teaching profession with clear educational priorities and the skills with which to achieve them.

The PGCE course has both a pedagogical and practical aspect. Our newly validated curriculum, which incorporates the Core Content framework, provides our trainees with a robust training year preparing them for their transition to become an Early Career Teachers. The university & school-based delivery, school experience, and academic modules feed into a spiral curriculum model under 4 overarching themes and subject knowledge development. During the year, you will gain experience teaching in at least two secondary schools and will acquire high-level skills in the application of new technologies in teaching and learning.

General Eligibility

GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade 4 (or C) or above (or recognized equivalents). Please be aware that whilst these GCSEs are not mandatory at the application point, these qualifications must be obtained by enrolment. See our page for additional GCSE Equivalency test information.

School experience is not a requirement for entry to the program. However, having experience in a school will support your preparation for training as a teacher.

Any applicants to the PE with EBacc route must have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade C or better at A level in the relevant EBacc subject. EBACC subject areas are Maths, English, History, MFL (Modern Foreign Languages), Geography, and the Sciences
