Japanese Woodblock Printing

Learn the traditional art of Japanese woodblock printing, also known as 'Ukiyo-e'. This unique and intricate technique involves carving designs onto wooden blocks and then printing them onto paper or fabric. You will explore the history and culture of Ukiyo-e, as well as the materials and tools used in the process. By the end of the course, you will have created your own original woodblock print.

This course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience in printing or drawing. You will have access to a range of materials and equipment, including wooden blocks, ink, and paper. Please note that this course takes place on campus, but some sessions may be held off-site at local print studios.

This immersive and highly practical 1-day workshop can be enjoyed by those with no previous experience, and in just one session you will be able to produce quick, pleasing, and unique print designs. Guided by your tutor, you will begin the day by carefully carving the printing block from a range of designs provided. You will then be guided on how to create your own unique design. Through demonstrations by your tutor, you will learn basic repeat patterns and by the end of the day, you will have produced your own prints to take home with you. Your tutor, Preeti Sood was born in Delhi and trained in Printmaking at Chandigarh College of Arts and Santiniketan, Kala Bhavan. She later completed her second MA degree in printmaking at Camberwell College of Art, University of the Arts London. Upon graduating she taught at the British School in New Delhi, India, and practiced as an artist in Garhi Studios, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. She has completed three solo shows internationally and has been selected as an artist in various printmaking shows in London, Delhi, Bangalore, and Japan.
